Where do we meet?
December 17th, 2017

Where do we meet? – This is the tagline of TroopTravel. But what does it actually mean and why have we used it for TroopTravel?

We believe in the importance of relationships in life. The need to belong is actually considered as a fundamental human needWikipedia states on the term of belongingness:

“Belongingness is the human emotional need to be an accepted member of a group. Whether it is family, friends, co-workers, a religion, or something else, people tend to have an ‘inherent’ desire to belong and be an important part of something greater than themselves. This implies a relationship that is greater than simple acquaintance or familiarity. The need to belong is the need to give and receive attention to and from others.”

Over the last 20 years, the way we live, we work and we build our groups to belong to has changed massively. Through the access to technology we are able to detach our group we belong to from our direct geographical reach. For those who remember the times before access to the internet, may remember that our social circles where limited to our local environment. Maybe you had a pen pal somewhere but that’s it. Today, we have friends all over the world. You may be part of a Facebook group or an online social circle where people are brought together because of sharing the same interest and not necessarily being based in the same location.

In the past companies tried to get the best talent locally available – today they recruit globally

Even companies operated differently before the common access to internet. What was the percentage of teams spread around different locations in 1990 in comparison to today? A company used to be a physical place where you brought resources (e.g. technology) and locally available talent together. Companies used to recruit under the premises of getting the best talent in a specific geographical location which are locally available. Big companies who could afford would try to motivate internationally available talent to move to a specific geographic location. This came at a huge cost and risk for the company.

Nowadays, companies do not need to bring their talent (human resources) continuously together in the same geographical location. Today, you can use the global talent pool and recruit from anywhere in the world. Having a physical office actually changed from a necessity to luxury for companies. With our technology available we can run companies with its talent spread over different locations. Just like we run our social circles.

A company is a group of people which satisfy the need of belonging

We wrote about the importance of face-to-face meetings earlier. The impact of technology has added a new purpose of traveling. While with technology, companies are more efficient, effective, fit more into personal lifestyles (by providing self-managed home offices) they have to focus more on supporting the fundamental need of belonging. In the end, a company is a group of people which satisfy the need of belonging. That’s why companies have to focus more on supporting the social connections between their employees. Without the belief that the group members are part of something bigger than themselves, they just remain individuals.

So if the need of fostering social connections through creating in-person meetings of people who are based in different locations is clear, the question for how to bring this group together is not “How can we bring everyone to location A?” but rather “Where do we meet?
